White Christmas! From Our Town to Yours…

A most unusual thing happened in an already very unusual year…it snowed for Christmas. I don’t have the actual statistics, but I’m certain that a White Christmas in Knoxville, Tennessee has happened only a handful of times over the last 100 years. In recent years, we’ve seen snow rarely if at all.

Note: Thanks to Donna Connolly of Retirement Reflections, I now have the statistics. I have inserted a link here.

I choose to believe that this is a sign that we’re covering over 2020, and can look ahead to a brighter, better year in 2021.

Despite the challenges, we leave 2020 with a treasure trove of memories and feel extremely blessed for the opportunities we had to travel and enjoy the staggering beauty of our incredible country.

We send our sincerest wishes to each of you for a wonderful Christmas season and the happiest New Year ever. We’ll be Easin’ Along on the road less traveled again in January. We would love nothing more than to have you join us.

  1. Thank’s for sharing , we have the cold, but no snow in eastern Kansas. Thanks for sharing, Merry Christmas, and wishing you a great New Year!

    1. Merry Christmas, Rod,
It’s hard to believe that we got snow and you didn’t. It’s about 21 degrees here right now and we’re certainly not used to that. I wonder what it is in Grey Eagle? I’m sure you will enjoy Florida and we are looking forward to it ourselves. Give our best to Sally, and stay in touch. Joe

  3. Merry Christmas!!
We moved to oak ridge in 1968 from Louisiana. We went to midnight Mass and as we left church it was snowing and snowed about 7 inches. We opened the curtains in the living room and watched in awe as the snow fell. Being from the Deep South it was an unforgettable experience. I was reminded of it last night as the snow began to fall.
P.S. miss seeing you two at the Y!

    1. Merry Christmas, Jo Ann,
Wow! Seven inches is a lot of snow for this part of the world. We measured a little over three on our deck last night. It’s too cold to go out now for another measurement, but it certainly is pretty! We miss the Y very much, but we plan to be away a lot this year, so we have not signed back up. Tell Donna and Beth West “hi” for us! Have a wonderful Christmas weekend. Joe

  4. GM Joe and Merry Christmas! We’re spending Christmas this year in the mountains in Boone, NC with our family. Like you, we too had quite a storm yesterday and ended up with a beautiful white Christmas this morning! Similarly, we haven’t had a white Christmas in many years so this is quite a treat at the end of quite a year to say the least!
Thank you so much for letting us “Ease Along” with you and Helen in

    1. Merry Christmas, Laurel,
Having snow on Christmas Day really is special. It’s also a very cold 21 degrees outside right now. We look forward to warming up in Florida and should arrive at St. George on 1/19. We’ll stay in touch and hope it works out. Have a wonderful weekend. Joe

    1. Merry Christmas, Ernie,
Snow on Christmas…what a treat! We’re sitting home, poking the fire, and can’t think of anything I had rather do any more than that. Have a wonderful Christmas weekend and a fabulous New Year. All our best to you both. Joe

  6. Merry Christmas, Joe and Helen –
Being a research-nerd, I had to look up the stats. Here they are: This was the 6th snowy Christmas in the past 121 years. The last one was in 2010.
The Warmest Christmas was in 1982 with a high of 76 degrees
Coldest Christmas was in 1983 with a high of 13 degrees and a low of -6
Wettest Christmas was in 2015 when we had over 2 inches of rain at TYS
Snowiest Christmas was in 1969 when 7 inches of snow fell in Knoxville https://www.wbir.com/article/weather/white-christmas-chances-east-tennessee/51-2d6eec97-f1d9-4997-9f77-43dc127c208a#:~:text=The%20last%20time%20the%20Knoxville,over%20121%20years%20of%20records.
Wishing you an awesome year ahead!

    1. Donna,
What a nice thing to do for us! I was in such a hurry to make our snowfall a timely story, I didn’t take the time to look up the information. My bad, but now that I have the facts, I updated my blog post…and gave you full credit. I remember the 1969 Christmas very well. I was in college at the time and had gone home for the holidays. When I returned to the old house we rented, we had no heat. Brrr! In 1982, it was so warm, I remember delivering Christmas presents to friends on my motorcycle, wearing a T-shirt. Thanks again for helping me recall those days. Wishing you and Richard a very blessed 2021. Please stay in touch. Joe

  7. Yay for White Christmases, Joe! Here in Spokane, it is rare to have snow on Christmas, but a few inches fell that night. I’ll share a pic next week! I like your metaphor of the snow covering 2020! Here’s to “easing along” into a new year!

    1. Good morning, Terri,
White Christmases are extremely rare in East Tennessee, but we enjoyed this one muchly. It has lingered for a few days allowing sledders to take over our hills…truly a treat. Looking forward to seeing your pic. Hope that your snow hasn’t slowed progress on your new home. Thanks for stopping by. Wishing you and Hans a blessed start to the New Year. Joe
